Overview
Debbie currently teaches 14 agility classes each week in
Rhome, Texas. Ten instructors share teaching responsibilities
for many of these classes.
Most classes are split into two groups of students and dogs,
and each instructor has an opportunity to work with both groups
during the class (classes run from 60 to 90 minutes). This
teaching plan allows each student/dog team ample practice
time on the agility equipment, as well as more individualized
attention from the instructors.
Class Structure
PAWS classes are structured and taught based on the student's
and dog's skill level.
Each student/dog team starts their training with a 4-week Foundation Agility Class. This class provides beneficial groundwork for the team which will enable them to be more successful once they start working on agility equipment. From Foundation Agility, the teams move directly into Beginner's Agility (Level 1), an 8-week class which focuses on the introduction of each agility obstacle to the dog. Training methods are always positive, and food, toys, and praise are used abundantly in both the Foundation and Beginners Agility Classes.
After completing
the 4-week Foundation Agility and 8-week Beginner's Agility Classes,
students move to Level 2. Obstacle sequencing
(negotiating a series of obstacles), commands, body language, and other handling
skills are emphasized at this level.
From Level 2, PAWS students and their dogs progress to each
higher level (Level 3 through Level 5) based on their handling
skills, teamwork, and space availability at the next level.
All training continues to be positive with emphasis on teamwork
and having fun.
